A Japanese kind of night

My dear friend Isa and I usually explore Davao City’s food scene once in a while. At the same time we catch up with each other’s lives as among the budding titos and titas of Davao.

For our recent dinner, we were thinking of having Japanese food. After going through our options of Japanese restaurants in the city, we opted for one of the newest restaurants to open, Katsu Country, located at The Junction Building, along Jacinto Ext., across Mercury Drug (see map below).

This will be my second time visiting the restaurant. I visited Katsu Country sometime in March when they were having their soft opening.

THE PLACE

Katsu Country features a simple interior. I love how well lighted the place is. There is a good number of chairs and tables to cater to groups and pairs.

THE FOOD

Katsu Country offers Japanese and Japanese-inspired dishes like pasta, curry, and katsu, among others. I find the price of their dishes here to be fairly reasonable. The price of their main dishes are from P140 to P260. I also find their serving size to be pretty generous. I think you get your money’s worth.

Isa and I ordered Chicken Katsu Set (P195), Nori Carbonara (P160), and Chicken Katsu Curry (P190).

The Chicken Katsu Set came with a serving of rice, miso soup, and a side of julienned cabbage. I also ordered this set during my first visit here.

Chicken Katsu Set

The unique dining experience of Katsu Country starts with this set. You are given a suribachi (Japanese mortar) with sesame seeds and using the surigoku (Japanese pestle) you grind the seeds to your heart’s content. You then pour the restaurant’s signature tonkatsu sauce into the bowl and then your dip is ready. I liked this experience; I find the grinding of the sesame seeds was somewhat satisfying.

Miso soup

The chicken katsu we had was properly cooked. I also find their tonkatsu sauce to be delicious. The miso soup was also pretty good. For the julienned cabbage, you dress it with their goma sauce, which is also pretty good.

Nori Carbonara

The Nori Carbonara was also great. However, as someone who loves nori, I did not get much of that delicious flavor coming from the nori as much as I would have wanted it to.

Chicken Katsu Curry

I also enjoyed the Chicken Katsu Curry. The chicken was cooked well while I find the curry to be really flavorful.

Overall, I think their food here is pretty good based on the food we ordered.

THE SERVICE

The service we received during our dinner here was pretty good. I find the staff to be attentive and friendly.

I also find the service to be fast when we visited here. Our orders were served in what I think was less than 10 minutes and all three orders were served at the same time.

BOTTOM LINE

Overall, Isa and I enjoyed our dinner here. The food was great and I find the prices to be fairly reasonable. The service was also pretty good.

I find the place to be great for dinner with friends or families.
